Over 200 student volunteers joined hands with the Research and Action Centre for Local Democracy (RACLD) to support Gram Panchayat–level data collection and participatory planning across multiple districts. The initiative marked a significant step towards strengthening grassroots governance through citizen-led action.
The volunteers played a key role in door-to-door household surveys, collecting information on socio-economic conditions, access to basic services, local infrastructure gaps, and community priorities. This ground-level data forms a critical foundation for preparing evidence-based Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs) that genuinely reflect the needs and aspirations of local communities.
Beyond data collection, volunteers were actively involved in organizing, categorizing, and assisting with the analysis of the information gathered. Under the guidance of RACLD’s research and field teams, students gained hands-on exposure to participatory planning processes, local governance structures, and democratic decision-making at the grassroots.
The initiative also focused on building civic responsibility among young citizens. By engaging directly with Panchayat representatives, local leaders, and residents, volunteers developed a deeper understanding of how governance functions at the village level and how citizen participation can directly influence development outcomes.
Speaking about the initiative, RACLD emphasized that youth engagement is essential for sustaining democratic institutions. When young people participate in governance processes early, they become informed, responsible stakeholders who contribute to transparency, accountability, and inclusive development.
This volunteer-driven effort not only strengthened the GPDP preparation process but also helped create a bridge between local governments and the communities they serve. It stands as a strong example of how collaborative action between civil society, youth, and Panchayats can lead to more responsive and people-centered governance.
RACLD plans to expand similar volunteer engagement programs in the coming months, encouraging more students and young professionals to participate in strengthening grassroots democracy across regions.
